501 P “Legendary Photographers of the Twentieth Century” (series)
Illustrated Lecture and audience interaction
“Legendary Photographers of the Twentieth Century” is a lecture series originally sponsored by the Utah Humanities Council through a grant to the Ogden Eccles Community Art Center. These programs showcase the earth changing images created by the most important photographers in history. These images date back to the birth of photography, in approximately 1839. The series illustrates the historical context that these photographers worked within, and how their personal relationships, values, world view, and visual interpretations have contributed to todays modern photography. The struggle for acceptance of photography as fine art is presented as an outgrowth of the prevailing attitudes of the European cultural elite. The birth of “pictorialism” and the subsequent journey to “straight” photography is explained, as we follow the Industrial Revolution in America to it’s apex. This presentation attempts to answer the questions, “Why are some photographs considered to be classic, and why do some photographers become legends? The presentations are offered in several different modules, with each presentation lasting approximately 90 minutes. These presentations are suitable for any group who enjoys photography, history, or art. Includes high quality projected images and period music.
Featured photographers and programs are as follows:
Module One: “The Pioneers” Alfred Steglitz, Edward Steichen, Paul Strand, Lewis Hine
Module Two: “The Visionaries” Andre Kertesz, Robert Doisneau, Walker Evans, Minor White
Module Three: “The Women” Julia Margaret Cameron, Imogen Cunningham, Tina Moddoti, Dorothea Lange, Margaret Bourke-White.
Module Four: “The Masters” Edward Weston, Richard Avedon, Irving Penn
These presentations are suitable for any group who enjoys photography, history, or art. The presentation includes high quality projected images and period music.
Speaking Fees are either negotiable or by honorarium per event.
Notes on Camera equipment used by students fat Jon Williams Seminars.
Most students will enjoy their learning experience much more when they have good quality camera equipment to use. Either film cameras or digital cameras are acceptable, however a digital SLR camera with interchangeable lens is much preferred for learning. Today classic film cameras are available at bargain prices, and they are capable of the very finest results. However, most students will be using a digital type camera. This is useful in being able to instantly see the effect of various camera adjustments and techniques. Nearly 100% of currently attending students use digital cameras. No matter what type of camera you choose to bring to class, it must be capable of being placed in a 100% manual adjustment mode. I have cameras that I can – loan you – if you don’t have access to one. I can recommend several different brands and models for you to buy if you need some quick no nonsense advice. Don’t hesitate to contact me for guidance on camera options. I have an article about – camera selection – on this website. It can be found on my PhotoNotes section.
